Four Day Weekend

My school district has a four day weekend for Memorial Day because we did not use our fourth snow day. So on Friday I got went to breakfast with Hubby, got my hair cut, helped Mom a little and went curtain shopping. Boy was the last one discouraging. There was only one style that was available in both of the lengths that I need (84" and 54"). I bought one panel in a beige and then when I got home I realized that my living has just too much beige. I will return it tomorrow. Yes, I know that I most certainly can shorten a longer length by 30 inches, but I really don't want to. At that rate I will make my own curtains. It might be cheaper. 
On Saturday, Hubby and I went to the local nursery to get plants and potting soil. I have planted the three pots that go by the entrance to my house. 

 The one below usually sits in a little chair, but Hubby hadn't retrieved it from the garage yet when this pic was taken.

The front porch is south facing so geraniums are one of the few plants that fair well in the bright sun that we get all day.

I also planted some produce....two different kinds of cherry tomatoes, basil, red lettuce and cucumbers. I use pots, because otherwise I get all kinds of worms on my tomato plants. 

Now I need to research when and how to harvest the lettuce and pray that our local bunnies don't dine on it. Veggie gardening is not my forte. I have an accidental green thumb with summer annuals, but that is about it. Here are the annuals that I still need to pot.

I probably need to buy more, but we shall see.

My rhododendron is blooming beautifully also.

I used to have a ton more irises, but these are all that are left. They are more purple than this picture suggests.

My hosta are huge this year. Probably due to all the rain.

Now for some crafting news. I have made progress on Baker Beach. 

I finished the water on this page and have just barely started the sand. Thankfully this is the last bit of sand with all of that mottled coloring. I would like to finish this page by the end of June and I am determined to get those last two pages on the left done this summer. My son is getting his own apartment in July and I want him to be able to have this soon after.

Slow Sunday Stitching

I know that I won't be doing any stitching today until after my daughter leaves to return to Boston this afternoon, but that is just fine with me. I have had a few opportunities to work on some crafts this week.

Baker Beach got some more blue stitches added. 

 The water is really filling in now.

I also worked on the 2015 Prairie Schooler Santa. Not a lot, but enough to see some progress.

I picked up my Granny Square Roses again also. I have now completed all the squares of all the roses that had leaves.

My dilemma is that I have this basket of roses that don't have leaves, but I ran out of the sage green yarn that I was using on the darker colored roses. I have no idea when or where I bought that yarn or what make or colorway it is. When I started this project a few years ago, I was trying to use up wayward yarn. 

 I don't like the way the the darker roses look with the dark green leaves. Unfortunately I only have a kelly green left in my stash and it is way too bright.

I think that I need to go to ACMoore or Michaels and try to find either a yarn very similar to the sage green or a totally different green that I can use on all of the rest of these roses. I don't want only a few to have the new green. That might be my shopping plan for tomorrow afternoon.

A 90th Birthday!

My mom turned 90 on Friday. My daughter came home from Boston and we celebrated with a dinner at Mom's house.

I think she looks pretty good for 90 despite her recent fall.

We didn't set the cake on fire with 90 candles. I settled for 10.

We had a really nice celebration. 

 This weekend I am going to get some long-awaited shopping time with my daughter. That is one thing that I really miss doing with her. It is just not as much fun shopping alone.

My garden is starting to get some color. I went with Hubby to pick out some hanging baskets for my Mother's Day gift.

 Aren't they all so pretty. My MIL gave me the one on the left below.

My lavender azalea has finally bloomed.

I looks pretty near the pink that is almost past peak.

I also have another pink azalea that hides behind the pool.

I has that same two color thing going on. The rhododendron behind it is just about to bloom also.

I hope I remember to take a picture when it opens up. I think I will wait until next weekend to buy my flowers for potting. This weekend I will enjoy my daughter's visit.

Happy Mother's Day!

I want to wish Happy Mother's Day to my fellow blogger moms. I hope you get to enjoy your day with your children and your own moms. This year my children will not be here to celebrate with me.

 I realize that I need to get some recent pictures as this one of my son and daughter is from Christmas 2015. 

My daughter will be visiting next weekend though for my mom's 90th birthday. Today we are planning to go to dinner at a nice little local restaurant called Smuggler Jack's that overlooks a small canal on the south shore of the Island. I don't think my mom will be joining us as she is not quite ready yet for that much activity. So today I am cooking a pot roast for her.

Many of you commented that you hoped that I enjoyed my shopping over last weekend. Well I never got there. By the time I was done helping Mom, I just wasn't in the mood. I think I may look online for those curtains as my time is so limited, but you never know. There are only a couple of nearby stores that carry curtains, so perhaps I will get to them soon.
One of my azaleas is in full bloom right now and still looks pretty good despite yesterday's rain. I am not sure why this azalea is two different colors as it never used to be, but it now sports light pink and coral.

There is a lavender azalea nearby that is always late to bloom. It is just starting now so I will share it next week.

Baker Beach got a little love last weekend. Although difficult to discern, I have added some medium colored blues to the water area. I hope to get some time to work on it today. That would make me happy on Mother's Day.

I plan to spend some time reading today also. I am in the midst of this book:

It was one of a number of books left at my school for others to enjoy and it is pretty good. It is sort of a mystery/romance. Really easy reading which is what I need when school is in session.

Sun during the week, rain on the weekend

So here it is the weekend and it is cold, cloudy and drizzly. It doesn't feel like Spring. No sitting on the front porch sipping coffee or wine depending on the time of day. No planting flowers in the sunshine. The sun and warm weather occurred during the week when I was working. Really? I was so looking forward to enjoying some time outdoors. Not Hubby though, his allergies are having a field day with him.
 I also need to start my spring window washing. Oh well, maybe I will at least go shopping for some new curtains for my living room. We bought a new couch last summer, but my plaid summer curtains clash with the leaf design on the couch. After 14 years, I can't complain that I need to buy new. So other than sitting and crafting which is not a bad way to spend my time off, I think I will go shopping.

I have made progress on Baker Beach this week, but nothing else. Here is where I was last week.

Here is where I am now. There is a bunch of cream and white that is somewhat different to see, but I am enjoying the change to blues and creams from browns and oranges.

I also put a few more stitches in my Family Rose quilt. I have finished all of the cross-hatching in one direction. 

Now I have to head the other way.

Bunny visited our deck early yesterday morning. He/she got real close to the house so I got a good picture.

Then a different bunny, I believe, decided to sprawl out on the grass.
